KOHLER, Wis – May 4, 2011 – Of all the things people transport and stash in their car trunks, a kitchen sink may seem rather peculiar. But Wes Bare of Mount Pleasant, Iowa says a Kohler cast iron sink he was transporting in his trunk kept a serious car crash from potentially becoming a fatal one.

On his way home from work last October, a minivan traveling 50 mph rear-ended him at full speed while Bare’s vehicle was at a stop. The cast iron sink he had acquired that same day absorbed most of the impact and pushed the rear of the car downward, preventing the car from crumpling around him. While Bare’s BMW was totaled, he suffered only minor injuries. And the cast iron sink? “Utterly undamaged,” Bare said. “The only mark the accident left on it was a scratch.”

A while after the accident, Bare spoke with one of the first responders who took pictures of the scene. “He told me that sink probably saved my life,” Bare said. “If my sink can stop a minivan in its tracks, dishes should be no sweat.”
