Pioneering MUSE School Incorporates KOHLER Water-Saving Products into its Progressive Green Design
Environmentally driven programs teach conservation throughout all aspects of learning
KOHLER, Wis. – Nov 14, 2012 – Few schools have been founded with such a focus on conservation from the ground up as the new MUSE School in Southern California. Conceived and founded in 2006 by actress, activist and mother of five, Suzy Amis Cameron, and supported by her husband, writer, producer and director, James Cameron, the MUSE School is focused on student-centered, hands-on learning. Hand in hand with that mission is a focus on the environment and green living that infuses all aspects of the school's instruction and character.
As part of that philosophy, in 2010, MUSE founders purchased a defunct school on 22 rural acres in Calabasas Highlands outside of Malibu and set about creating a new campus that was built using all reclaimed materials and environmentally friendly products. A natural partnership with Kohler Co. sprung out of a mutual desire to promote and use water-saving products wherever possible, and the new MUSE School uses KOHLER water-saving plumbing products throughout all of its buildings. In all, nearly 100 KOHLER products, from the Sculpted Touchless faucet with a hybrid energy system to Steward® waterless urinals, were used in the renovation of the school. All KOHLER products used represent the most advanced water-saving engineering and design and combine unparalleled performance with exceptional aesthetics.
The natural world inspires and informs every aspect of the MUSE School, from the campus-wide ban on anything plastic to the Alice Waters' Seed-to-Table learning program that enlists students in the planning, planting, harvesting and preparation of campus meals. The buildings showcase concrete countertops made from recycled glass, classrooms that are designed for maximum natural light, and repurposed wood flooring that came from demolished buildings. The grounds have been redesigned to make the most of the natural landscape and to use outdoor classrooms to teach children about the local ecology. Originally planned according to an aggressive zero-waste strategy, today the MUSE school it is considered one of the greenest schools in the country and is a model for conservation-minded builders and educators worldwide.
