Internationally renowned designer Clodagh looks to the guiding principles of Feng Shui to bring balance, harmony and serenity to her designer bathroom, "City Spa,"
"The room reflects the need people have for a quiet space and a few moments for celebration of self in today's time impoverished world," said Clodagh. "This small urban spa enhances the rituals of everyday living."
Engaging all the senses, this haven of calm and relaxation fuses clean lines with untraditional materials. The poured concrete floor, vanity countertop and shower bench offer tactile intrigue and interject an element of timelessness. The current hot trend of stainless steel is addressed through Kohler's Vessels Timpani™ lavatory. Vertical surfaces sheathed in satiny stainless steel also encase an undermounted Kohler Greek, Bath soaking tub. A meditative viewing garden speaks to the Zen ideal of connecting with nature. The sound of water cascading from an 8-foot plate glass waterfall imparts a sense of calm while a decorative bamboo screen and peace lilies nestled in a bed of river rocks provide further natural touches.
Clodagh maximizes effective use of the small space through innovative design elements. "Mirror is used architecturally to visually open up the room, amplify the light and, in Feng Shui terms, 'increase opportunities'," she notes. "The etched glass door for the shower and toilet area slides back and out of the way allowing natural light into the bathroom without giving up privacy." Light as art also emanates from distinctive steel mesh lighting fixtures in the bathing area to alter the space and convey a soothing atmosphere. Crisp paperwhites delicately contrast with the room's monochromatic layers of warm, neutral shades. Plumbing fixtures in featured Sandbar and the granite-toned Ann Sacks glass mosaic tile in the shower contribute to an innately relaxing ambiance. In keeping with the Zen philosophy of freeing up the mind and spirit by eliminating life's cluttering possessions, bath accessories are kept to a minimum. Streamlined storage adds to the room's sense of order and leaves an impression of space, light and openness, which is peaceful in its own right.
