Architect. Contact an architect when adding space or making
structural changes such as moving walls or opening a ceiling. Architects
are also helpful when planning a major mechanical renovation such as electrical,
plumbing, heating or ventilation changes. Look for architects who are members
of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) or call 1-800-AIA-9930 for
information and the phone number of your local chapter. |

Interior Designer. Interior designers advise on structural changes
or the remodeling of existing spaces. They specialize in maximizing limited
space, budget and client needs. Professional interior designers keep abreast
of regulations on environmental safety, building and fire codes, accessible
design legislation and historic preservation. The American Society of Interior
Designers (ASID) represents over 20,000 professionally qualified interior
designers. To find the best and most conveniently located interior designer
near you, call ASIDís Client/Designer Referral Service at 1-800-775-ASID(2743). |

Kitchen and Bath Designer. The National Kitchen and Bath Association
(NKBA) certifies kitchen designers (CKD) and bathroom designers (CBD).
These kitchen/bath design specialists have passed an examination, have
at least seven years of design experience, and must continue their industry
education to remain certified. They can manage an entire remodeling project,
or provide design services only. Individuals may be affiliated with a showroom,
or may work as independent design consultants. As members of NKBA, they
keep abreast of the latest design trends. Call 1-800-401-NKBA(6522), extension

Remodeling Contractor. Once you have a final plan and have chosen
products for your new kitchen or bath, it's time to select a contractor
to do the actual work. Look for a member of a trade association like the
National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), whose members adhere
to a strict code of ethics. Ask your designer for a recommendation. Talk
to friends or neighbors who have remodeled to get referrals. For a free
copy of the "Select A Professional Remodeling Contractor" brochure
and a list of NARI members in your area, you can call NARI at 1-801-440-NARI(6274).

Plumbing Contractor. Hire a plumbing contractor when your remodeling
involves replacing plumbing fixtures or faucets. Most states or municipalities
require plumbers to be licensed; check with your local consumer affairs
office. Your designer or remodeler may be able to recommend a qualified
plumbing professional. Or call your state or local chapter of the National
Association of Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Contractors (NAPHCC) for
a list of members. You may contact the NAPHCC directly at 1-800-533-7694
for further information. |
