KOHLER, Wis. – Feb. 7, 2007 – According to the American Water Works
(AWWA) Association 60 percent of total water use in the home is attributed to indoor plumbing fixtures such as toilets, showerheads and faucets. Water use in commercial buildings such as airports, hotels and schools is even more significant due to the frequency of use and sheer numbers of people using these facilities each day. On average, almost half of indoor commercial water use is connected with plumbing products according to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority.
As a global leader in kitchen and bath design and technology, Kohler Co. seeks to offer the most choices in low-consumption products for both residential and commercial applications and further establishes its industry leadership in offering high-performing plumbing products that save water.
“Using water more wisely – especially potable water which uses energy and chemicals to treat – is imperative, as supplies are limited and our population and economy are growing,” said Rob Zimmerman, senior staff engineer for Kohler’s water conservation initiatives. “Public education, along with new water-efficient products and building design methods, are critical to contain water use. Plumbing manufacturers such as Kohler are responding to this need by developing new products that use less water, but don't sacrifice performance.”
With the design and construction industry – as well as consumers – focusing heavily on green building and sustainability, trade professionals should explore how the aggressive water savings achieved with these KOHLER products can help buildings earn LEED® water-efficiency points. Additionally, these products, especially toilets, may also qualify for local water utility rebate programs helping homeowners and building owners reap financial benefits by installing these water-saving products.
Toilets
The toilet, which accounts for 26 percent of indoor water use according to AWWA, represents one of the best opportunities to save water by installing newer models that use less than the industry 1.6 gpf standard. Kohler offers several models in its water conservation portfolio that offer varying levels of water savings, including specific high efficiency toilets (HET) that offer aggressive water savings via 1.28 gpf or lower flush settings that can help buildings earn LEED water-efficiency points.
• KOHLER Cimarron Comfort Height™ 1.28 gpf toilet with Class Five EcoSmart™ (EST) technology – saves up to 3,200 gallons of water*
• KOHLER toilets with Pressure Lite™ technology – saves 2,000 - 5,000 gallons of water*
• KOHLER toilets with Power Lite® technology - saves 2,000 - 5,000 gallons of water*
• KOHLER toilets with Class Five™ technology – saves 2,000 – 3,200 gallons of water*

Urinals
With the introduction of its environmentally friendly waterless urinals in 2006, Kohler offers commercial owners an opportunity to save water and reduce sewage and maintenance costs while also providing outstanding performance and stylish design to users. In terms of traditional urinals, KOHLER 0.5 gpf urinals are engineered to utilize 50 percent less water than industry standard 1.0 gpf urinals.
• KOHLER Steward™ waterless urinals – can deliver commercial owners a potential water savings of up to 40,000 gallons of water per fixture, per year versus a standard 1.0 gpf urinal based on the same usage
• KOHLER Bardon Touchless 0.5 gpf urinal – integrated valve and sensor provide clean design aesthetics while a 0.5 gpf setting uses 50 percent less water than industry standard 1.0 gpf urinals
• KOHLER Bardon™, Dexter™, and Darfield™ 0.5 gpf urinals – these urinals utilize 50 percent less water than industry standard 1.0 gpf urinals when combined with new KOHLER 0.5 gpf flushometers with Tripoint technology that minimizes false activations
Showerheads
In today’s busy world, most people covet their daily shower ritual as the one time in the day to relax and get away from it all. Because of the paramount role the shower plays in their lives, consumers are leery of low-flow showering products. In the past, most consumers equated low-flow showerheads to mean less water coverage and less water pressure making it difficult to completely rinse shampoo suds out of one’s hair. Kohler puts these false assumptions to rest by offering a low-flow showerhead and handshower that provide opportunities to conserve water without compromising performance.
• KOHLER MasterShower® Ecofficient™ showerhead and handshower – 2.0 gpm sprayheads reduce water flow by up to 20 percent over traditional 2.5 gpm sprayheads
Faucets
Homeowners can easily and affordably save water by installing low-flow aerators on new and existing faucets throughout the home. Additionally homeowners and specifiers can install KOHLER Touchless faucets with Tripoint technology to save water. Tripoint technology utilizes a highly-accurate activation sensor that saves water by keeping false activations to a minimum and can also save additional water by the use of 0.5 gpf aerators.
• KOHLER low-flow aerators – feature a 1.5 gpm flow rate which represents a 30 percent reduction over 2.2 gpm models
• KOHLER Touchless faucets – Tripoint technology minimizes false activations and 0.5 gpf aerators to save water
• KOHLER Rite-Temp® pressure balancing valves – shower valves that provide exceptional performance and safety at flow rates as low as 1.75 gpm
